Fight dinosaurs in your exosuit

Exoprimal is an online, team-based action game by CAPCOM. In this PvPvE shooter, players suit up in Ironman-like exosuits to battle against dinosaurs that fall out of singularities in the sky. The game features various game modes and exosuits, each fulfilling a different role in a squad.

The core gameplay of Exoprmal is similar to Destiny 2’s Gambit mode. Two teams of five race to complete a series of objectives that all involve shooting up hordes of enemy dinosaurs. There’s a good variety of objective and dinosaur types that make team composition a critical part of a squad’s success.

A shooter with a solid foundation

The exosuits of Exoprimal fall under the three main archetypes of multiplayer RPGs — the DPS, the tank, and the healer/ support. Players can play as a melee or ranged damage dealer, a barrier-equipped tank, or a support who provides healing and other utilities. These exosuits feel good to control and play during PvE, but balancing issues are obvious when in PvP.

The time attack design of the main game mode, Dino Survival, is thrilling and full of tension. The variety in objective types and the mix of dinosaur types players will face in every situation demands on-the-fly adjustments to the team composition. Players can switch to a different exosuit depending on what the situation calls for. This means every game will feel different depending on a team’s approach and speed.

As players progress through objectives, they will see specters of the enemy team, letting them know whether they’re trailing or ahead. By the end of the match, players will inevitably clash against the enemy team, and this is where the game’s problems surface. The firefights feel disjointed from the core PvE gameplay and the exosuits’ lack of balance sours the PvP experience.

Get ready to suit up

Players can look forward to a number of other challenges in Exoprimal. In addition to the main Dino Survival mode, this multiplayer game also features a competitive PvE mode — aptly named Savage Gauntlet. Here, you will be teamed with up to four other players and go up against other teams from all over the world to complete a set of special missions. These missions rotate weekly so you’ll be able to look forward to new challenges each time.

It’s important to note, though, that Savage Gauntlet is geared toward more veteran players as the missions take on a high difficulty level. Your exosuit composition and module choices matter greatly in this mode, as well. As you continue to compete in these challenges every season, you can gather a number of exosuit variants as they’re periodically released. These variants feature different weapons and combat styles as compared to their original models.

A twist on the gameplay

Another interesting aspect of Exoprimal is that there are significant changes to the gameplay the more you play it, making it more exciting and less repetitive. As you soldier on through matches, the main story unfolds in the background and, when things culminate, introduces new elements that will keep you on your toes. The more you play the game, the more changes are added.

A major collaboration with Mega Man

CAPCOM is set to roll out the highly anticipated fourth update for Exoprimal on April 17 across all platforms, promising an array of exciting additions and collaborations. Season 4 of Exoprimal introduces a thrilling crossover with Mega Man, featuring a fierce new boss battle against Yellow Devil and a collection of Bomber-themed cosmetics. This battle of epic proportions will require the collective effort of 10 players to thwart the massive robot's shapeshifting attacks and formidable arsenal.

Additionally, players can customize their Exofighters with special collaboration cosmetic sets inspired by Mega Man characters. This update also introduces two exhilarating game modes aimed at enhancing player customization and challenge levels. In the Custom Match mode, players can create personalized lobbies with their choice of rules, missions, and maps, offering endless replayability and opportunities for cooperative play. Meanwhile, the Time Loop Rebellion mode presents players with a more challenging iteration of the game's climactic boss battle, rewarding combat prowess with valuable rewards.

Great PvE but poor PvP

Excluding its PvP segments, Exoprimal is a fun shooter experience. The exosuits have interesting abilities and the gunplay feels great. The dynamic objectives and different types of dinosaurs to take on prevent every match from becoming repetitive fast. There is a strong emphasis on team composition, making it an excellent game to play with friends. If you can stomach the boring PvP, this game is worth the pick up.
